I'll still appreciate your advice, if you'd like to give it. And if you can play it even somewhat well after five years of study, you would be well ahead of the curve.Įdit: I see that this question has been asked much lower in the thread. There are only two ways to play it in a way that's enjoyable: somewhat well and really well.

An uneven Fantasie-Impromptu is just not enjoyable, in my opinion. When advanced beginners play that Eb Major Nocturne and it sounds nothing like when a concert pianist plays it but they're keeping a steady tempo and dynamics and it actually does sound musical and there's feeling behind it, I'm nonetheless impressed and will people props because it is actually good to listen to even when it's being played more like a steady, slow waltz. I think trying to play just 1-2 steps ahead of what you're able to do right now, rather than 10 steps ahead, is the way to go. But, like, when you're in your first year, everything is challenging and every piece of music is difficult. Not that there's anything wrong with playing at your comfort level, but it doesn't develop additional skills if you're no longer struggling. If everything is easy, you're not improving. When people are trying an Impromptu or Ballade, I think it's fair for me to ramp up my critique to a considerably higher standard because those are concert pieces.Īlso, people should be challenging themselves with difficult music if they're trying to improve at piano. At that point, it should be about what they're doing right, but also pointing out their next steps they could be working on, not nitpicking finer details of musicality, which will arrive with enough practice if they've got a strong foundation in basics.

Playing pieces that are WAAAAY above your skill level is the bad thing that I was referring to.įor what it's worth, I do my best to watch people's 1st week, 1st month, 1st year type videos and to leave encouraging remarks when they're doing reasonable things. Playing pieces that are just slightly above your skill level is good and will help you to improve. It's GOOD to challenge yourself, but not too much. End rant.ĮDIT: Just woke up this morning and this seems to have blown up, so wanted to add another good point that I've seen in many comments. Trying them now is not only a waste of time, but actively detrimental to any future piano prospects. If you just play pieces of the right level and have enough dedication, you WILL be able to play these hard pieces eventually. It really pains me how common it is, and I genuinely hope people can stop doing it. Even if you're just playing piano for fun it should still be avoided I can guarantee that playing easier pieces and seeing fast progress will be much more fun than grueling away at a piece that realistically you won't be able to play at anything better than a mediocre level. It's not possible to play pieces like this so early, and the only thing that will be achieved by doing it is developing bad habits, bad technique, and if you're unlucky injuring yourself. I see so many posts on here of people playing insanely hard pieces after only 1 or 2 years playing piano (particularly Fantasie Impromptu, La Campanella, Moonlight 3rd movement etc etc).
